Fettle chats to Founder Ellen Newman

Tell us a little about The Great State and how you started?

The Great State is a fresh-face in Aussie skincare. We proudly do one thing really well: our Soothing Skin Balm. We wanted to create a product that would be really useful for every household so we produced a balm that is effective for treating everything from nappy rash and cradle cap, to sunburn, windburn, shaving rash and common skin complaints. We have a background in haircare and after leaving that industry, decided to go to something similar in skincare, this time with a natural, minimalist brand identity.

How important is health and wellbeing to you?

As a mum of two young kids and owner of two businesses, I have no choice other than to prioritise my health and wellbeing. Instead of considering it a luxury, I consider looking after myself a responsibility to my family. I used to be a Home Economics teacher and before that, I worked in a gym for 4 years, so being mindful of my health and fitness are second nature to me.

What do you do to look after yourself?

I do pilates, barre or bounce 5 days a week. Moving my body is important to release stress and tension and get my endorphins pumping. I also dry brush my body a couple of times a week to remove dead skin cells and encourage blood flow and the removal of toxins. I take a bath once a week to really zone out, and I eat real food, not too much (most of the time) but never stress about counting calories.

What is your favourite way to relax?

Going for a swim in the ocean. There's no close second. After being at the beach, I am totally euphoric.

Where would you like to see The Great State business in 5 years time?

We have had an incredible reception in Australia which we would love to build on. We are also planning for international expansion. In 5 years we would like to have established distribution in the US, China and Japan with Europe soon to follow.
